Senior’s Week this week!

It’s Senior’s Week this week! So we are giving you all the tips and tricks for caring for your hard working (and often very sore) feet.

We don’t always appreciate how many kilometers our feet have done in their lifetime. The average moderately active person takes around 7,500 steps each day. If you maintain that daily average until 80 years of age, you’ll have walked about 216,262,500 steps in your lifetime. Doing the math; the average person, with the average stride length, will have walked a distance of around 180,000 kilometers at 80 years of age.

With all of this stress over time it’s not surprising our feet can start to suffer from osteoarthritis, muscle pain, callous, corns, balance problems and many other debilitating conditions. If any of these sound familiar to you then there is no need to continue in pain! Although some conditions are not always completely curable there are a lot of things we can do to make sure you can live your life without pain:

  • Osteoarthritis is an irreversible condition but we can take pressure off these sore joints by supporting and cushioning your feet with an orthotic so they work more efficiently.
  • Muscle pain is usually caused by and overpull of muscles under increased stress. Stretching, strengthening, mobilisation and realignment can all help relieve this pain. You may even just need some footwear advice!
  • Callous & Corns can easily be removed and prevented with toe wedges and padding during a general treatment with one of our Podiatrists. You can also use non-greasy products such as Callusan urea cream on your feet to prevent the build-up of hard skin.
  • Balance problems can be caused by a number of neurological conditions, previous injury or just the natural ageing process but this doesn’t mean there is nothing you can do to improve your balance. Our Podiatrists can guide you through a number of strengthening and balance exercises to help you gain back your confidence.
